What Dental Crowns Can Do
Dental crowns can be used in many situations. They are the strongest, most complete restorations for your teeth, and we often call on them when other restorations simply aren’t cut out for the job. They can be used for:
- Decayed teeth
- Infected teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Eroded teeth
- Small teeth
- Poorly shaped teeth
- Gapped or crooked teeth
- Discolored teeth
For decayed teeth, we often use a filling, but can turn to an inlay or onlay for larger cavities. But if decay has weakened a tooth too much, a dental crown can provide greater strength, support, and protection.
When a tooth is treated for infection using root canal therapy, we can sometimes use a filling to protect it, but most often a crown works best.
When teeth are damaged by trauma, veneers or bonding can work well for cosmetic repairs. But if the tooth is structurally compromised, a dental crown gives the necessary protection and support. Acidic erosion can call for crowns because the acid can attack all available surfaces of the tooth, but the crown provides a resistant protective coat for your tooth.
Veneers are usually used for cosmetic treatments, but if the restoration will be under too much stress, a crown might be a better choice.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a restoration that fits over the visible part of the tooth, completely covering it down to the gum line. It is sometimes called a cap.
The dental crown procedure begins with an evaluation of your tooth. We will consider other options that might preserve more of your tooth structure, and recommend a crown only if it’s the best way to preserve your teeth.
Usually at your next appointment, we will remove damaged parts of your tooth, and shape the tooth to support the dental crown. We use our iTero system to take digital impressions of your teeth–you don’t have to bite down into a tray of sticky goo. We’ll fit you with a temporary dental crown and send your impression to a lab where the crown will be custom-crafted.
When the crown is ready, we will call you back in. We will remove the temporary, and check your final crown for fit and appearance. Then we’ll cement it in place.
